Why We Built Drowze: The Honest Sleep App

6 min read · March 13, 2026

We didn't set out to build a sleep app. We set out to fix what's broken about the ones that already exist.

If you've ever downloaded one of the popular "wellness" apps, you know the drill: gorgeous onboarding, soothing voice telling you how much better your life will be, and then — a paywall. $70/year. $15/month. "Start your free trial" with your credit card already entered so they can charge you the moment you forget to cancel.

We think that's a lousy way to help people sleep.

And if you're a new parent? It's even worse. You're up at 2 AM, exhausted, trying to soothe a baby while fumbling in the dark. You need sounds playing AND a soft light to see by — but no app does both. So you're juggling a white noise app, a flashlight, and a prayer. We built Drowze to be the one app that handles all of it.

The problem with premium sleep apps

Let's be specific about what bothers us:

How Drowze is different

We built Drowze around a simple idea: sleep tools should be accessible, affordable, and honest.

What you get for free

We believe the free tier should be genuinely useful — not a crippled demo designed to frustrate you into upgrading. Here's what every Drowze user gets without paying anything:

What premium adds

Premium exists for power users who want the full toolkit:

That's it. No meditation courses. No celebrity content. No features you'll never use. Just more of the sleep tools that actually work.

Our pricing philosophy

We could charge more. The market has shown that people will pay $70/year for a sleep app. But we think the right question isn't "what will the market bear?" — it's "what's fair?"

Sleep sounds cost almost nothing to serve. There are no ongoing content costs like a Netflix or Spotify. The sounds are recorded once, encoded once, and shipped in the app bundle. After development costs are covered, the marginal cost per user is effectively zero.

So we priced Drowze to cover our costs and make a modest living — not to extract maximum revenue. And we offer a lifetime purchase because we think it's the right thing to do.

Our promise: No dark patterns, ever. No fake countdown timers. No "limited time offers." No guilt-trip cancellation screens. If you want to cancel, there's a clear link that takes you straight to your Apple subscription settings. We'd rather earn your loyalty than trap you.

Sleep shouldn't be a luxury

One in three adults doesn't get enough sleep. That's a public health crisis, not a market opportunity. We believe the tools to sleep better should be affordable for everyone — not locked behind a premium subscription that costs more than most people's streaming services combined.

That's why we built Drowze. To be the alternative for everyone who thinks sleep apps have gotten too expensive, too bloated, and too manipulative.
